TMJ and jaw pain consultation · Mumbai

TMJ Jaw Pain, Clicking or Muscle Tension?

Jaw pain, locking or difficulty opening can make eating and daily life uncomfortable. TMJ refers to the jaw joint; symptoms may arise from the joint, muscles or another cause. An examination helps identify what needs treatment.

This page is for TMJ and jaw-pain concerns. Orthognathic jaw surgery is a separate service with a different assessment.

Consultation fee: ₹1,500 one time.

TMJ Jaw Pain Surgery in Mumbai

A systematic assessment

Look at the whole pattern

Assessment is guided by symptoms and examination. Not all jaw pain starts in the joint, and one treatment does not fit every patient. Describe where symptoms begin, how long they last and what makes them better or worse. Mention painful clicking, locking, restricted opening, clenching habits, previous appliances and other treatment.

A painless click does not automatically need treatment. Facial pain and headaches can have several causes, so they should not be attributed to the bite without an appropriate assessment.

01

Joint and movement

Review jaw movement, joint sounds, range and symptoms.

02

Muscles and teeth

Check chewing muscles, bite, tooth wear and related concerns.

03

History and daily factors

Discuss symptom pattern, sleep, habits, posture and relevant medical history.

Treatment options

Start with the cause and the least complex suitable step

Management depends on the findings. The clinician may discuss self-care, a splint, bite assessment, further investigation or referral where appropriate. Use T-Scan or other tools only when they answer a clinical question; explain what they can and cannot show.

Assessment reviews jaw movement, joint and muscle tenderness, oral health and relevant medical history. Imaging or additional review is advised when it helps answer a clinical question.

The first plan may include guided self-care, exercises or physiotherapy, medicines or an appliance when appropriate. More invasive procedures are considered only where indicated. Ask what the proposed treatment addresses and how improvement will be reviewed.

Care planned around you

See how jaw joint, muscle and bite factors are looked at together, and why the simplest suitable step usually comes first.

Experience

Whole-pattern assessment

The consultation considers jaw movement, muscles, teeth, symptom pattern and relevant daily or medical factors. Dr. Chamria considers jaw joints, muscles, teeth and the symptoms you describe as part of the assessment.

Comfort

A measured approach

Recommendations follow the findings. Your clinician explains self-care, further assessment or other suitable next steps. Explain any difficulty opening, previous treatment concerns and what makes symptoms worse. Bring reports and existing appliances to make the discussion more useful.

Trust

No one-size-fits-all claim

Jaw pain can have different causes. The assessment helps distinguish what may be contributing and whether referral is appropriate. Ask for the reason, expected benefit and limitations of any procedure. Routine permanent changes to the bite or teeth.

Treatment planning

Jaw pain treatment costs and review visits

The first consultation aims to identify the problem and agree an initial plan. Follow-up checks your response and whether further investigation or treatment is needed. Duration depends on the diagnosis and response; one visit cannot promise a cure for every TMJ concern.

The consultation fee is ₹1,500. Your written estimate identifies any appliance, investigation or procedure being proposed and the planned reviews. Avoid choosing irreversible treatment or a surgical package before understanding the diagnosis and suitable alternatives.

Experience

Diagnosis of Jaw Pain & TMJ Disorders

Accurate diagnosis of jaw pain and TMJ disorders is crucial for effective treatment. Specialists conduct a physical examination to assess jaw movement, tenderness, and misalignment. Imaging tests like X-rays help detect fractures, while CT scans provide detailed views of the jawbone and TMJ to identify complex injuries or disorders.

Comfort

Treatment for Jaw Pain & TMJ Disorders

Mild cases can be managed with rest, pain relief, and a soft diet. Severe cases may require surgical intervention, such as open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using plates and screws. TMJ dislocations may be treated with closed reduction techniques. Post-treatment care includes immobilization, followed by physical therapy to restore function.

Trust

Recovery & Prevention

Healing time varies from weeks to months, depending on the severity of the condition. Physical therapy helps regain jaw mobility, and patients should follow a soft diet during recovery. Preventive measures, including using mouthguards in sports, practicing good posture, and avoiding excessive jaw strain, can help reduce TMJ issues and jaw trauma.

TMJ FAQs

Questions patients ask

Not always. The need for assessment depends on symptoms, function and clinical findings.

Symptoms can overlap with other conditions. Assessment helps determine whether jaw-related factors may be contributing.

Jaw surgery is not the routine answer to TMJ symptoms. Orthognathic surgery and TMJ care are evaluated separately.

No. Headaches and facial pain need assessment of possible causes before treatment is chosen.

Most care starts with conservative options. A procedure is discussed when the diagnosis and previous care justify it.

The consultation aims to establish the problem and next steps. Duration and response to care vary with the diagnosis.
